Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit essential oil is cold pressed from grapefruit peels. The botanical name for grapefruit trees is Citrus paradisi. This wonderfully fresh-smelling essential oil is ideal for people who want to lose a little weight.

It actually facilitates weight loss and helps you stay positive throughout the process. Grapefruit oil even helps curb cravings for sweets. It also has a whole list of other benefits.

This oil has antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, antidepressant, antifungal, antioxidant, antiseptic, aperient, disinfectant, diuretic, lymphatic, stimulant and tonic therapeutic properties.

1. Lose Weight

How to Lose Weight with Essential Oils

Grapefruit essential oil can be taken internally for this benefit. Add 1 drop to an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it down. You can also apply it topically on areas where you tend to carry excess weight.

Dilute it in a carrier oil first by adding 1 to 4 drops of grapefruit EO to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Diffusing grapefruit oil vapors can help you lose weight, too. Put 2 to 4 drops of it in your diffuser, along with 1/4 cup of distilled water, and run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

2. Stop Cravings for Sweet Treats

Practice grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy when you feel the need to eat candy or some other sugary treat. If you are away from home and can’t use your diffuser, just keep the bottle of grapefruit essential oil with you and inhale the vapors directly from the bottle.

Breathe the fragrance in through your nose and deep into your lungs several times. It should curb your cravings within a few minutes.

3. Boost Your Metabolism

Metabolism

Rev up your metabolism with grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy or take 1 drop in a glass of water. A higher metabolism helps you burn more calories.

Grapefruit essential oil is a natural diuretic. Diffuse it or apply it topically for this benefit. Losing excess water weight cleanses toxins from the body. It also helps you feel better, both physically and emotionally.

*Be careful not to get essential oils in your eyes or nose. They are very irritating to sensitive mucous membranes. Apply diluted essential oils no closer to the eye than the outer ridge of the eye socket.*

5. Alleviate Cellulite

Massage a 1% to 4% grapefruit essential oil/carrier oil blend into areas where cellulite has accumulated. It will reduce the cellulite naturally. You can use any carrier oil with grapefruit essential oil, although apricot kernel oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil are especially good for improving skin tone and elasticity.

8. Prevent Illness

Mix up a 2% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend, put it in a small dropper bottle and keep it with you to use as a hand sanitizer. Grapefruit oil’s natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties will kill the germs before they can infect you.

Babassu oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil have antibacterial properties, too. They would be excellent carrier oils to use for a grapefruit EO hand sanitizer.

9. Treat or Prevent Bacterial Infection

Apply a 2% to 3% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend to wounds and sores to prevent bacterial infections. For best results apply the blend several times a day. As with the hand sanitizer blend, babassu oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are very good to use for an antibacterial blend.

They balance the skin’s production of sebum which is the thick, oily substance that causes acne.

You could take a refreshing grapefruit EO bath, too. Mix the grapefruit essential oil into a lighter carrier oil like Abyssinian oil, grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil to make grapefruit bath oil.

A 4% blend should be fine. When you’re ready to take a warm, relaxing bath, add 5 to 10 drops of the grapefruit EO bath oil to the bath water.

If you want to enhance the anti-depressant properties of grapefruit oil, add a few drops of frankincense essential oil, jasmine essential oil or juniper berry essential oil. They are all good for treating depression.

Frankincense and juniper berry will add a warm, woody fragrance while jasmine will sweeten the blend with a lovely, uplifting floral scent.

Muscle spasms or cramps

Use a 2% to 4% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend to alleviate menstrual cramps. Grapefruit oil naturally dilates blood vessels and improves circulation which reduces menstrual cramps. For pain relief, add a few drops of ylang ylang essential oil.

It is an excellent natural pain reliever. Massage the oil blend into your lower abdomen and back for relief. Aromatherapy with grapefruit EO and ylang ylang may also help.

For headache pain relief, add some ylang ylang EO to the blend.

Was this list helpful to you? I absolutely love the fresh, uplifting, sweet yet tangy scent of grapefruit. It is unlike any of the other citrus oils and every bit as useful. It is also an inexpensive oil. A 15 ml bottle costs between $8 and $15. It is good to have this citrus oil on hand.
