23 Excellent Uses of Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit essential oil is cold pressed from grapefruit peels. The botanical name for grapefruit trees is Citrus paradisi. This wonderfully fresh-smelling essential oil is ideal for people who want to lose a little weight.

It actually facilitates weight loss and helps you stay positive throughout the process. Grapefruit oil even helps curb cravings for sweets. It also has a whole list of other benefits.

This oil has antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, antidepressant, antifungal, antioxidant, antiseptic, aperient, disinfectant, diuretic, lymphatic, stimulant and tonic therapeutic properties.

1. Lose Weight

Grapefruit essential oil can be taken internally for this benefit. Add 1 drop to an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it down. You can also apply it topically on areas where you tend to carry excess weight.

Dilute it in a carrier oil first by adding 1 to 4 drops of grapefruit EO to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Diffusing grapefruit oil vapors can help you lose weight, too. Put 2 to 4 drops of it in your diffuser, along with 1/4 cup of distilled water, and run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

2. Stop Cravings for Sweet Treats

Practice grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy when you feel the need to eat candy or some other sugary treat. If you are away from home and can’t use your diffuser, just keep the bottle of grapefruit essential oil with you and inhale the vapors directly from the bottle.

Breathe the fragrance in through your nose and deep into your lungs several times. It should curb your cravings within a few minutes.

3. Boost Your Metabolism

Rev up your metabolism with grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy or take 1 drop in a glass of water. A higher metabolism helps you burn more calories.

4. Lose Excess Water Weight

Grapefruit essential oil is a natural diuretic. Diffuse it or apply it topically for this benefit. Losing excess water weight cleanses toxins from the body. It also helps you feel better, both physically and emotionally.

*Be careful not to get essential oils in your eyes or nose. They are very irritating to sensitive mucous membranes. Apply diluted essential oils no closer to the eye than the outer ridge of the eye socket.*

You can use any carrier oil with grapefruit essential oil, although apricot kernel oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil are especially good for improving skin tone and elasticity.

Massage a 1% to 2% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend into the abdomen to improve your digestive tract health. Grapefruit aromatherapy is also beneficial for digestion or you can take 1 drop of grapefruit oil in water.

Practice grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy when you are feeling nauseous. Grapefruit and other citrus oils are excellent this. If you tend to get nauseous while you are away from home, take the bottle of grapefruit EO with you.

Another way to utilize grapefruit oil to eliminate nausea is to put it on your hands, rub them together, cup your hands over your nose and inhale the vapors. This can help with motion sickness, too.

8. Prevent Illness

Mix up a 2% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend, put it in a small dropper bottle and keep it with you to use as a hand sanitizer. Grapefruit oil’s natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties will kill the germs before they can infect you.

Babassu oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil have antibacterial properties, too. They would be excellent carrier oils to use for a grapefruit EO hand sanitizer.

9. Treat or Prevent Bacterial Infection

Apply a 2% to 3% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend to wounds and sores to prevent bacterial infections. For best results apply the blend several times a day. As with the hand sanitizer blend, babassu oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are very good to use for an antibacterial blend.

*A 1% to 3% dilution rate (1 to 3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil) is fine for everyday use of grapefruit EO. Stronger dilution rates should only be used for 10 days to 2 weeks at a time.*

10. Alleviate Candida or Oral Thrush Infections

Gargle and rinse your mouth with grapefruit essential oil several times a day to get rid of oral thrush or Candida albicans infections. Use 1 drop of oil per 8-ounce glass of water.

11. Fight Free Radicals

Utilize grapefruit essential oil to fight early aging. Its antioxidant properties are excellent for this purpose. Massage the skin with a 1% to 2% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend.

Grapefruit EO aromatherapy and drinking an 8-ounce glass of water with 1 drop of grapefruit essential oil mixed in also provide this benefit.

12. Treat Acne

Dab pimples with a 2% grapefruit essential oil/carrier oil blend, leave it on the pimples for a few minutes to soak in then spread it around on the surrounding skin. Its antibacterial and antiseptic properties should clear the acne up fairly quickly. Argan oil and jojoba oil are excellent carrier oils for acne-fighting blends. They balance the skin’s production of sebum which is the thick, oily substance that causes acne.

13. Moisturize Oily Skin

Use a 1% grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend as a refreshing skin moisturizer for oily skin. It fights bacteria and free radicals that harm the skin without making it too oily.

*Grapefruit essential oil is slightly phototoxic; however, a dilution rate of 4% or less should be safe.*

14. Improve Circulation

Use a 1% to 2% grapefruit essential oil/carrier oil blend to improve circulation. Just massage it into the skin anywhere to get your circulation going. Aromatherapy can also be used for this.

You could take a refreshing grapefruit EO bath, too. Mix the grapefruit essential oil into a lighter carrier oil like Abyssinian oil, grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil to make grapefruit bath oil.

A 4% blend should be fine. When you’re ready to take a warm, relaxing bath, add 5 to 10 drops of the grapefruit EO bath oil to the bath water.

15. Improve Focus and Cognitive Function

Enjoy a grapefruit essential oil aromatherapy session to improve your focus and memory. You can also apply a grapefruit EO/carrier oil blend to your chest, neck and wrists for this benefit.

16. Get Squeaky-clean Hair

Put some grapefruit essential oil in your shampoo to wash excess oils away. It can eliminate dandruff, too. You can also add grapefruit oil to your conditioner to make your hair shinier and more manageable. Just add a few drops to about 1/4 cup of your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

*Place a drop of a 2% grapefruit essential oil/carrier oil blend on an inconspicuous area of skin. Wait for at least a few hours to make sure you aren’t sensitive to it before using it topically on larger areas.*

It is an excellent natural pain reliever. Massage the oil blend into your lower abdomen and back for relief. Aromatherapy with grapefruit EO and ylang ylang may also help.

*Make sure you get pure grapefruit essential oil for ingestion. You don’t want to ingest an essential oil that has been mixed with anything.*

22. Treat a Hangover

Practice grapefruit EO aromatherapy to get rid of hangover symptoms. It naturally stimulates the liver and gallbladder to quickly flush the alcohol out of your system. You can also apply a 2% to 4% blend topically for hangovers. Massage it into the upper right abdominal area (directly over the liver and gallbladder), lower back, neck and throat. For headache pain relief, add some ylang ylang EO to the blend.

23. Clean and Freshen Your Home

Add 5 to 10 drops of grapefruit EO and 1 to 2 tablespoons of distilled vinegar to about 1 cup of warm water. Put the solution in a spray bottle and use it to clean the hard surfaces in your home.

Its natural antiseptic and antifungal properties will kill bacteria and fungi naturally. Put a few drops in your diffuser and run that so your whole house smells fresh and clean.
