Home Remedies for Vaginal Itching

By Sabrina Wilson / March 27, 2017

There are few things in life that are more uncomfortable and embarrassing than dealing with vaginal itching. No matter the reason behind your vaginal itch, it is the worst. You feel a deep itch in your private parts, and even worse, when you’re out of the house, there is nothing you can do about it. You just have to try to sit still and deal with the feeling. You may even find yourself squirming a bit to try to find relief like a toddler that needs to use the restroom.

No one wants to be in this situation. The good news here is that there are some home remedies for vaginal itching that can help with the itch and discomfort that makes life bearable when you have to be out of your house.

Honey

Honey is not just for sweetening your tea but has medicinal health benefits, as well. You can apply honey to the area where you are dealing with the itching to get relief, and this will help to clear up the skin if you have any rashes or irritation.

To use honey, you’ll want to cover the impacted areas and leave the honey to sit on your skin for about a half an hour. Then, you can take a relaxing warm bath to help soak off the honey. Once the area is clean, you’ll want to pat it dry delicately to help prevent you from adding further irritation to the spot with rubbing a towel over it. You can do this twice a day until you no longer have the issues with the itching.

Epsom Salt Bath

Epsom salts are another great cure-all for so many different conditions, but it can also help to take away any itching and irritation you’re dealing with in your vaginal area. The method of using this natural remedy is to add about a cup of Epsom salts to your bath water along with a few drops of lavender oil. You’ll be feeling much better after a relaxing bath.

Cold Compress

One of the best ways to deal with an itch is to chill the skin to get rid of the irritation. A cold compress works wonders to help relieve the itch. As this is in a more delicate place with the potential for bodily fluids, you may want to opt for a disposable ziplock baggie filled with ice covered with a washcloth instead of a bag of frozen veggies or your regular ice pack. It may be tempting to just slap a cold, wet washcloth onto your skin, but this could potentially cause further irritation depending on how long you leave it on. If you do opt for this method, be sure to pat your skin completely dry afterward.

Aloe Vera Gel

You may be aware of using aloe vera gel for burns, but it can also be used for vaginal itching. You’ll want to apply the gel either straight from the plant leaves or use a gel purchased at the store that is 100 percent aloe vera to your itchy areas. Let this stay on your skin for about ten minutes, and then, you’ll want to rinse it off.

Products to Avoid

Your vaginal itch and irritation could be made worse depending on the personal hygiene products that you use on the area. You’ll want to opt for products that are dye-free, fragrance-free, and are meant to be used in this area. Don’t forget the products that you use on the clothing that goes against your skin. Be careful with your choices for detergent and fabric softener as this can also cause further irritation. Not looking for these features could set you up for further itch and irritation. In addition, cotton underwear is your friend during this time. You don’t want to use synthetic fabrics that don’t let your skin breathe and can allow moisture to sit on your skin.

Note of Caution

Vaginal itching may be a symptom of an underlying condition, and it may be something serious. If you’ve been treating your itching for a while and other symptoms become more apparent, it may be time to see your trusted healthcare professional. You may need an antibiotic to kick a serious infection or other medication to handle a yeast infection. It can be hard to open up about this type of condition because of the embarrassment or worry that they may see you as unhygienic, but a lack of hygiene is usually not the cause of your itch issue.

Conclusion

Vaginal itching can be devastating to have to deal with both physically and emotionally. It’s uncomfortable, and all you want to do is scratch at it, even though you know that will only make your issue worse. It’s emotionally hard because of the embarrassment and worry that it can cause. The most important thing that you can do to help you through this time period is to find that perfect method of relieving the vulvar itching that is plaguing you. Try one of these remedies until you find the one that works for you.
