Copaiba balsam essential oil is distilled from the resin of a South American rainforest tree known botanically as Copaifera officinalis. The trees are not cut down to make the oil, though. Each tree produces around 40 liters of resin each year.
This little-known essential oil is one of my top two favorites. It is used to treat a number of maladies including inflammation and skin disorders but it is also excellent for softening and toning the skin.
Copaiba balsam has analgesic, antibacterial, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, astringent, cicatrisant, disinfectant, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, hypotensive and stimulant therapeutic properties.
1. Treat Upper Respiratory Infections
Massage copaiba balsam essential oil into your chest, throat, shoulders and back to treat upper respiratory infections. Its expectorant, analgesic, antibacterial, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties are excellent for this use. Blend 1 to 2 drops of copaiba oil with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil before you apply it.
If you don’t dilute it in a carrier oil, it can cause skin irritation. You can also add 5 to 6 drops of copaiba to your diffuser and enjoy a little aromatherapy for symptom relief. Copaiba essential oil has a wonderful, fresh, woodsy fragrance. You can add citrus oils, tea tree and eucalyptus to the diffuser, too, for additional aromatherapy benefits. I enjoy copaiba mixed with sweet orange.
2. Reduce Allergies
Practice copaiba balsam aromatherapy to reduce inflammation in the airways and throughout the body due to allergic reactions.
3. Soothe Sore Throats
Add 1 to 2 drops of copaiba balsam essential oil to an 8-ounce glass of tepid water and gargle with it to get relief from sore throats. Its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties will provide pain relief while its emollient properties soothe dry throat irritation. The oil’s antibacterial and disinfectant properties may eradicate the cause of the sore throat altogether.
4. Improve Digestion
Massage a 1% to 3% copaiba essential oil/carrier oil blend into the abdominal area to improve digestion. It will reduce inflammation and stimulate the entire digestive tract. A 30- to 60-minute aromatherapy session with your meals may also improve digestion.
*A 1% to 3% dilution rate (1 to 3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil) is fine for everyday use. Stronger dilution rates should only be used for 10 days to 2 weeks at a time.*
10. Soothe Intestinal Cramps
Apply the 1% to 3% copaiba essential oil/carrier oil blend to the abdomen to soothe and relax painful cramping.
11. Boost Your Immune System
Apply a 1% to 3% copaiba balsam EO/carrier oil blend topically or ingest 1 to 2 drops in a vege cap to boost your immune system. It is full of antioxidants that can improve your immune system, whether the oil is applied topically or ingested. Add 1 to 2 drops of olive oil to the vege cap along with the copaiba.
12. Alleviate Hemorrhoids
Apply a 1% to 3% copaiba balsam/carrier oil blend to the area around the anus twice a day to help alleviate hemorrhoid pain and inflammation. You can also add 2 drops of copaiba balsam EO to 1 teaspoon of unrefined coconut oil, divide the mix into two sections of an ice cube tray, chill it in the refrigerator and use each 1/2-teaspoon portion as a suppository.
It gives fast, cooling, pain relief then continues to work to reduce the inflammation and shrink the swelling. You can mix up enough to make a couple dozen suppositories at a time.
13. Get Relief from Diarrhea
Massage the lower abdomen and lower back with a 1% to 3% copaiba balsam EO/carrier oil blend to get relief from diarrhea and cramping. It can be applied several times a day, as necessary.
14. Treat Urinary Tract Infections
Apply the 1% to 3% copaiba/carrier oil blend to the lower abdomen directly over the bladder and the lower back from the waist down to treat urinary tract infections. The copaiba oil will give quick relief and kill the bacteria.
You can also soak in a warm bath with copaiba balsam essential oil added. Blend the copaiba into a light-weight carrier oil first then add 5 to 10 drops to your bathwater. Abyssinian oil, grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil are great for making bath oils.
*Place a drop of a 2% copaiba balsam essential oil/carrier oil blend on an inconspicuous area of skin and wait for at least a few hours to make sure you aren’t sensitive to it.*

Massage a 1% to 3% copaiba/carrier oil blend into painful, inflamed areas for relief from Lupus and Fibromyalgia symptoms. It can be applied two to three times a day. You can add other essential oils to enhance the effectiveness of the blend.
You can also safely increase the dilution rate to as much as 8% copaiba balsam, if you need to. Just start out with the lower rate and increase it in small increments until you get relief.

19. Moisturize Dry Skin
Use a 1% to 2% copaiba essential oil/carrier oil blend to moisturize dry skin. Its emollient properties are deeply moisturizing. You can use any carrier oil you prefer with copaiba balsam oil.
I’ve recently discovered kukui nut oil, which I really like. It is a great, light-weight oil for hot summer weather. Argan oil is also a good carrier oil for everyday moisturizing.
20. Get Rid of Acne
Dab a 3% copaiba/carrier oil blend on acne sores to reduce pain and inflammation and kill the bacteria that causes the sores. Argan oil and jojoba oil are great carrier oils for this purpose. They help regulate sebum production.
Sebum is the oily substance produced by the skin that causes clogged pores and leads to acne outbreaks. You can also add a few drops of copaiba to a light face moisturizer, if you have one that you like to use. The emollient properties in copaiba will also improve the skin’s overall health, making it soft and supple.
21. Firm and Tone Aging Skin
Moisturize your face, neck and chest with a 1% to 2% copaiba balsam EO/carrier oil blend to firm loose skin and the underlying muscles. The copaiba is a natural toner due to its astringent properties. I use it twice a day after washing. You can blend it with other essential oils for even more benefits.
I like to add a little clary sage to the copaiba with kukui oil for a relaxing nighttime moisturizer. In the morning I use a tea tree, lemongrass and copaiba in kukui oil blend for an uplifting start to my day. You can also blend it with frankincense, lavender, neroli, rose, red mandarin and sandalwood, each of which has wonderful skin-improving properties.
*Copaiba balsam EO enhances the effectiveness of other essential oils. Be cautious when using it in a blend. It’s best to use other oils at about 1/2 their recommended strength when used with copaiba.*

22. Treat or Prevent Bacterial Infections in Wounds
Put copaiba essential oil on wounds and sores to treat or prevent bacterial infections, relieve the pain and speed healing. Dilute it with a carrier oil first. Coconut oil is great for this purpose. A 1% to 3% dilution rate should work but you can go up to as high as 8%, if necessary.
23. Shrink Varicose Veins
Gently, apply a 1% to 3% copaiba balsam essential oil/carrier oil blend to varicose veins twice a day. It helps shrink the veins while it reduces pain and inflammation. Copaiba will also help prevent new varicose veins due to its astringent properties.
24. Alleviate Athlete’s Foot and Toenail Fungus
Use a 6% to 8% copaiba EO/carrier oil blend to get rid of athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. The active constituent known as b-caryophyllene or beta-caryophyllene, which is found in copaiba balsam and ginger essential oils, is a clinically proven antifungal compound. Apply the oil twice a day after washing and thoroughly drying the infected area.
25. Eradicate Candida Yeast Infections
Add 1 to 2 drops of copaiba balsam essential oil to an 8-ounce glass of tepid water and rinse your mouth with it several times a day to get rid of oral candida yeast or thrush infections. For vaginal yeast infections, combine 2 to 4 drops of copaiba oil per 1 teaspoon of unrefined coconut oil, divide it into 1/2-teaspoon portions in an ice cube tray, refrigerate for 30 to 60 minutes and use them as vaginal suppositories.
Use one suppository at least each night before bed. For best results, use one in the morning, too. Unrefined coconut oil also has anti-fungal properties, making this particular blend very effective for clearing up yeast infections. Don’t try to use fractionated coconut oil for this purpose. It won’t solidify in the refrigerator.

Apply a 3% copaiba balsam EO/carrier oil blend to the scalp at least 30 minutes before washing to prevent hair loss. The astringent properties in copaiba firm the hair follicles, preventing excessive hair loss during washing.
If you can, apply it 1 to 2 hours ahead of time to give the copaiba plenty of time to do its job. If you only have 10 to 15 minutes, blend the copaiba into aloe vera gel and apply that to the scalp. The aloe vera gel protects the skin but allows the copaiba balsam oil to be absorbed very quickly.

Practice copaiba balsam essential oil aromatherapy to calm anxiety and nervousness. It has a wonderful, fresh scent that is very relaxing. You can blend it with other oil, if you prefer. I like to add 6 drops of copaiba and 6 drops of orange to my diffuser for a refreshing fragrance.
If you tend to suffer anxiety attacks and nervousness when you are away from home and can’t use a diffuser, just keep the copaiba balsam EO bottle with you. Take a few deep inhales through the nose when you begin to feel anxious.
