16 Uses of Pennyroyal Essential Oil and What You Need to Know BEFORE You Use it

Pennyroyal essential oil, which is distilled from the Mentha pulegium plant, has been used for centuries. In early human history, it was used to treat digestive and bowl disorders, bites from venomous animals, infections in the upper respiratory system, sores in the mouth and “women’s troubles.” It has also been used to treat muscle weakness and encourage the onset of menstruation.

Pennyroyal EO is still used in modern times; however, we have learned over the centuries how dangerous this oil is. It does have excellent anti-microbial, insecticide, anti-arthritic, decongestant, digestive, emenagogue and other beneficial properties. If you do use this oil, do so with extreme caution.

Safer Alternatives: There are many safer essential oils that are excellent for cleaning and disinfecting. Eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils top the list of safer alternatives, but you can practically just pick your favorite fragrance. Citrus essential oils and pine essential oils are all great options, too, which is why there are so many citrus-based and pine-based commercial cleansers on the market.

Was this list helpful to you? I have never used pennyroyal essential oil, although its ability to kill pests and insects is impressive. If you do use this oil, treat it like you would any pesticide or household disinfectant. Any essential oil can cause problems, if it is overused or misused. Heck, even eye drops are toxic if ingested.

Be very cautious when diluting this particular oil, though. Essential oil bottles can be a bit tricky to get just 1 or 2 drops out of and this oil isn’t one to “fudge” on. Lavender oil, well, if I get a short stream instead of 1 or 2 clear drops, I don’t really worry about it. With pennyroyal EO, though, I would carefully put 1 or 2 drops on a spoon, then add it to the carrier oil. If a stream came out, I would pour it back in the bottle and try again.

Please leave a comment to let me know if this list helped and share your own experiences with pennyroyal essential oil. Having an on-going list of how others use this oil, how well it worked and if it caused any problems would be great. Be sure to share, too, so that others can become aware of all the uses, and precautions that should be taken, for this essential oil.
